The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is a government body that funds research and development in renewable energy. This project is studying how smart EV chargers can help balance the electricity grid as more Australians adopt EVs and solar power.
No. The $1,100 discount is only valid when the Ocular IQ Home Solar charger is purchased and installed by EVSE Australia as part of this ARENA project. This is required for the project's data collection and grid research components.

No, this isn't an off-peak-only program. Your charger will be connected via a Dynamic Connection on a Primary Tariff.

 

Energex's active device management technology for EV chargers. This means your charger can draw solar power and access time-of-use tariff rates, rather than being restricted to fixed off-peak windows.

During periods when the local network is under stress, Energex may send a signal to temporarily reduce (not switch off) your charger's output, down to a minimum of 1.5kW, up to a maximum of 15kW. These reductions are what the research component is capturing. At all other times, your charger operates at full capacity.

A Distributed Energy Resource (DER) includes solar panels, batteries, or other home generation/storage systems. "Managed" means your energy provider actively controls when your system exports or stores energy — like being part of a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) or demand response program.
No, solar is not required. The Ocular IQ is "solar-ready", meaning it will integrate with solar if you add it later. You can still participate in the project and receive the discount without having solar panels.
The offer is available to South East Queensland postcodes in the Energex distribution area. This includes Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, and surrounding regions. Use the eligibility checker above to confirm your postcode.
The discounted price includes the charger unit, standard installation by a licensed electrician, Wi-Fi setup, and app configuration. Additional costs may apply for complex installations (e.g., long cable runs, switchboard upgrades).
A standard install includes a 40-amp RCBO at the switchboard, up to 15-metres of 10mm² cabling, a 32-amp isolator before the charger and up to 20 metres of CT cabling being run from the switchboard to the charger.
A standard installation typically takes 2-3 hours. Our installer will assess your switchboard and determine the best mounting location for your charger.
The ARENA project has limited spots available and runs until project targets are met. We recommend registering your interest as soon as possible to secure your discount.
